Saral awarded Soldier of the Year, 2012
kamala Shrestha, a resident of Kathmandu, got a call from her son, Saral Shrestha, studying in the Unites States.
“I’m trying my hands on something big, please pray for me,” he said over the phone. He did not elaborate on what he was going to do or what was on his mind. She later found out that her son was getting admitted in the US Army and she wasn’t too happy about it.
After three years, her heart has changed towards her son’s profession and she’s very proud of his success. Sergeant Saral Shrestha of the US Army recently was awarded ‘Soldier of the Year, 2012’.
“I don’t see any reason to not be happy for my son’s success,” shared Kamala.
Operation Command of the US Army awards one of the seven sergeants ‘Soldier of the Year’ and Saral was successful in bagging the title, leaving behind the rest.
Saral, at the moment, is with the Special Forces Command (Airborne) in the US Army and he is also set to participate in the ‘Best Warrior’ Award in October. “Soldier of the Year is the brigade level award but Department of Army Best Warrior is the highest award,” informed Saral over the email.
In September 15, 2009, when Saral got into the Army, it had only been around three years that he had stepped in America for his education.
A graduate from Bellevue University in Nebraska in Bachelors in Computer Information Science Networking, he shocked his friends and family when he chose to enter the Army.
It’s not unusual for Nepalis to enter the British or Indian Army but very few make it in the US Army. However, Saral’s father, Ramesh Kumar Shrestha, Professor of Political Science at Patan Multiple Campus in Lalitpur, is not surprised that his son got in.
“Saral is already a citizen of America now,” shared Ramesh Kumar, adding, “He did go on a Student Visa but he was provided with the citizenship once he was chosen to be in the Army.”
“For America to be powerful, besides Gokhali (Nepali), there is a lot of contribution from people from all around the world,” recollected Ramesh as a student of International Relations.
He said that at a time when the world is turning into a global village because of technology and the people getting more interested in the Western world, it was not surprising that his son chose to be in the US Army.
“A great inspiration for me was my great grandfather, Sundar Kumar Shrestha, who fought during the World War II in Oceana and Nagaland from the British Army side. I heard his stories when I was growing up and I guess that inspired me to some extent,” shared Saral.
Even though the Shrestha family has a background in the Army, Saral’s father and grandfather never joined any forces. His ancestors in Kantipur (now Kathmandu) were in the Army during the Malla period.
When the Gorkha Army attacked Kirtipur, the last king of the Malla period, Jaya Prakash Malla, had asked for help from Saral’s ancestors to fight the Gokhali Army and protect Kirtipur.
After nine generations, Saral has joined the US Army and proved that it runs in his blood to be a fighter and in the army.

Miss Nepal Shristi home 'enriched'
It was enriching. I am grateful for having the opportunity which I think was adventurous,” expressed Miss Nepal 2012 Shristi Shrestha of her wonderful Miss World experience on arrival at Kathmandu on August 23.
She didn’t bring home the crown home as yet another Miss World dream shattered on August 18 for Nepal, but she has brought back cherished moments along with a few achievements to be proud of.
Shristi was ranked 21st among 116 participants of the world and she bagged the Top 10 positions in two fast titles — Multimedia Award and Beach Beauty. She was also picked as one of the best dancers in ‘Top Dancers of the World’. These accomplishments show that her hard work and training have paid off to an extent.
Gopal Sundar Lal Kakshapati, Chairman of The Hidden Treasure claims, “This is a big achievement. She has showed how we can do it. It has also encouraged more candidates to apply for the coming Miss Nepal pageants.”
And to Shristi, the pageant was worth every little effort.
“During the pageant, I gave my 110 per cent, every second. I am happy with my performance and my representation. I don’t have regrets,” she said,
Another proud moment was when Miss World official Steve Douglas mentioned after meeting her, “Nepalis are beautiful and I am looking forward to next year.”
As Miss World was not just about competing, Shristi reveals she made friends and visited beautiful places which are her memorable moments of Miss World held in in Ordos, China.
“I made lots of friends. The girls from my group became very close. There was togetherness but no jealousy and hatred amongst us though it was a competition,” she shared of her experience adding, “This moment was my dream.”
Visiting Shanghai, Beijing and nomadic places made her “feel blessed for this chance. It was amazing to see their culture, tradition and way of living and to share it with the ladies of the competition”.
The country had pinned their hopes on her and Kakshapati mentioned, “We were sure she would be in Top 15.”
Though she didn’t make it, she divulged, “I gave my best possible to represent Nepal.”
And her not so memorable moment includes not making to the Beauty with a Purpose. “The video was strong and many had liked it while some were in tears. I don’t know what they looked and overlooked,” she opined. However, Shristi is Nepal’s Miss World as she has made Nepal proud. Back in Nepal, she will be working with UNICEF, WWF to carry on with the humanitarian work.

Miss China Yu Wenxia Grabs Miss World 2012
This is the second time Miss China has been awarded the title.Miss China Yu Wenxia took away the title of Miss World 2012 this year. Miss Wales – Sophie Elizabeth Moulds became the first runner-up and Miss Australia Jessica Michelle became the second runner-up in the pageant.
The beauty pageant this year was held at Inner Mongolian city of Ordos. While Sanya, another popular city of China had hosted the event several times, it was for the first time for an inner city like Ordos to have hosted the world class beauty pageant. A highest number ever of 116 contestants had made it to the pageant.
Shristi Shrestha, who had represented Nepal in the pageant wasn’t successful in any achieving significant achievement from Miss World 2012. However, optimistic we may have been with her progress in the pageant; she followed the same fate as of previous participants from Nepal. Here are some images of Shristi Shrestha as seen in the Finale event held at Ordos today.

After ‘Munni’, It’s Kanchhi’s Turn
Just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse for our morphing Nepali cinema, I came across this footage that made me cringe so bad I had to pause the video a couple of times before I could finish watching it. It was the visual of a song featured in the upcoming Nepali movie Thank You and I was in total disgust to find out it was a total rip off of the hit Bollywood tune ‘Munni Badnaam Hui’, only here ‘Munni’ was replaced by ‘Kanchhi’.
We’ve had numerous cases of copies in our film industry, sometimes it’s posters and sometimes it’s story lines from international cinemas and sadly, this movie is yet another addition to the list of shame. It even shares its title with a Hindi film and although it may purely be coincidental, the filmmakers could have still tried to be more original.
Personally, it’s not really the kind of video I’d go around recommending but I just feel one must know what sort of changes our movie scene is facing at the moment and decide for yourself what kind of impact it leaves on.
Here’s the Video.

KFC, Pizza Hut shut in Nepal over death threats
All four KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants in Nepal shut down on Tuesday saying that staff had attacked and threatened to kill branch managers.
Devyani International, which operates outlets of KFC and Pizza Hut in Nepal and neighbouring India, wrote a letter to authorities announcing the immediate closure of its eateries in the capital Kathmandu.
"In order to disrupt our operations, some staff have physically attacked and threatened to kill the senior managers," the company said in a letter leaked to local media and seen by AFP.
"These acts have put the life of senior managers at risk. To maintain the safety of our restaurants and the staff, we have shut down our services for an indefinite period," it said.
The U.S. restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken entered the Nepalese market last Wednesday, along with Pizza Hut. Both belong to the Yum! brand, the world's largest restaurant company in terms of units.
This is certainly a milestone for Nepal; the market so far has been untouched by global brands of stature like KFC and Pizza Hut. Excited customers lined up for hours to get a taste of American fast food, showing the level of anticipation and expectation Nepalese customers have from these two brands.

Government to approach ADB for metro railway DPR
The government is all set to approach the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) of a metro railway system and feasibility study of a North-South railway link.
The Ministry of Physical Planning, Works and Transport Management is preparing to propose the ADB for this within a week.
In a bid to cater to the demand of mass transport system, the government has planned to a build metro railway system or Mass Rapid Transit System (underground and elevated railway) in the Capital. Korean consulting companies in joint venture with local partners are conducting a feasibility study of the metro railway.
“We will soon be formally proposing the ADB for metro’s DPR and in-depth feasibility study of a North-South railway connecting India and China,” said a high level official at the ministry. The official said they were working on the study to make it more attractive to prospective investors or seek grant assistance from donors in future for the construction work.
The North-South link is conceived for connecting two neighboring countries as part of Trans-Asia Railway Network. In December last year, Nepal had agreed to be a part of the railway network that will connect the country with railway networks of Europe, enabling uninterrupted movement of people and goods. India and China had also agreed to participate in the Trans-Asia Railway link.
The government has been working on the metro plan for the last three years. According to the preliminary inception report prepared by consulting firms, the metro system in Kathmandu will have five lines with a combined length of 67km. Four lines are planned to be built inside the Ring Road, with the one running around the Ring Road will be 27.35km long. Chungsuk Engineering Company, Korea Transport Institution, Kunhwa Consulting and Engineering Company, Korea Rail Network Authority and two local companies— Building Design Authority and Environmental and Research Management Consultant—are preparing the feasibility study report.
“We hope to get the complete feasibility report within two months,” said Ram Kumar Lamsal, director general of the Railway Department. He said that the preliminary report has showed that three lines would be elevated and the other two would be built underground.
The proposed metro network will have 31 stations with its main terminal at Ratnapark, according to the inception report. The metro will cover almost all major bus stops such as Kalanki, Satdobato, Koteshwor, Chabahil, Narayan Gopal Chowk, Gongabu of the Ring Road and New Baneshwor, Singha Durbar and Thamel.
