1,300 chickens destroyed

Around 1,300 chickens and 200 ducks at Manohara Landless Squatters´ Settlement have been destroyed on 29th November, Tuesday on the suspicion of bird flu.

A team of doctors from the Department of Health, Directorate of Animal Health, Division of Avian Influenza and Animal Rapid Response destroyed ducks and chicken by burying after killing with the use of poisonous substances.

According to Senior Veterinary Doctor and In-charge of the Team Dr. Narayan Prasad Ghimire, the team destroyed the ducks and chicken after detection of bird flu in chicken of the area.

Five chicken of local Chandra Bahadur Tamang had died on November 10 and 30 chicken on November 11. The Bird Flu was suspected after the dead chickens were tested at the Central Veterinary Lab, Tripureswor.

Dr. Ghimire further said the bird flu was confirmed after the sample of the chicks was sent to London, the UK, for the lab test.  The chicken and ducks were destroyed today as per the government´s decision after the government received this information on Monday.

49th International Hotel and Restaurants Association World Congress kicks off

Hospitality leaders from around the world converged here on Monday to participate at the 49th International Hotel and Restaurants Association (IH&RA) World Congress for the interest of all hoteliers’ worldwide. The event is being held in Nepal after almost 27 years.

President Ram Baran Yadav inaugurated the three-day event that is expected to make wider impact on the burgeoning tourism sector of the country and facilitate the interest and rights of tourism entrepreneurs around the world.

President Yadav hoped that the event would help Nepal be recognised across the globe and disseminate a positive message to world travellers. “As the government has accorded high priority for the tourism sector under Public Private Partnership (PPP), such an event would boost confidence of the Nepali hospitality sector.”

Minster for Tourism and Civil Aviation Lokendra Bista Magar said under PPP, the government has adopted a liberal policy for the development of the tourism sector and facilitate tourism entrepreneurs. “Development of infrastructure is also in high priority of the government.”

IH&RA President Ghassan Aidi said the hospitality sector can make a huge contribution to overcome the economic crisis by attracting capital investment. According to Aidi, around 10 hotels are opened across the globe everyday and each new hotel is provides employment to 100 individuals.

Focusing on several issues affecting the hospitality sector, Aidi added that climate change is one of the issues severely affecting the sector. “It’s time to act for the betterment and sustainable development of the tourism sector, and together we can do it.”

HAN president Prasidha Bahadur Panday said the World Congress will help Nepal to promote itself in the international arena and will also motivate international investors to inject investments here.

Although the government estimates show that the tourism sector contributes around 3 percent to the country’s GDP, HAN says the sector’s contribution stands at as high as 17 percent.

“It is important to acknowledge that tourism is not an isolated industry, but works hand-in-hand with many other small- and large-scale enterprises as well as large scale industries,” said Panday. More than 180 delegates from 30 countries are participating at the congress.

NAC aircraft deal in December

The umbrella agreement between Nepal and China that has been planned in December will finally approve the purchase of turbo powered aircraft Modern Ark 60 (MA-60) and Y-12 for Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC).

“During the visit of Chinese prime minister Wen Jiabao in December the country is entering into an umbrella agreement that will pave way for the purchase of MA-60 and Y-12 aircrafts,” said executive chairman of the corporation Manrup Shahi.

The corporation has been planning to purchase ninteen-seater Y-12 and 56-seater MA-60 and has also sent a technical team to China to study its technical aspect and viability.

But the meeting between the two higher level leaders of the two countries will also finalise whether Nepal is purchasing the aircraft on grant or soft loan facility, Shahi, said, adding that the technical report has recommended the purchase of five Y-12 and three MA-60 aircraft, with either half on grant on on Soft loan facility.

The number of aircraft will also depend on the production capacity of the company. The technical team has submitted its report on Friday.

After the high level discussion, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) and Civil Aviation Authority of China also will discuss on the technical rules and regulation for the flight operation.

“Both of the aircraft MA-60 and Y-12 are well built with European and American parts and Canadian engine which are well known for quality performance,” said NA technical representative Ganesh Thakur. “MA-60 is a certified aircraft of Civil Aviation Authority of China and can be used for flight operation in Nepal too.”

It is a turboprop-powered airliner made by China’s Xi’an Aircraft Industrial Corporation under the China Aviation Industry Corporation I. “The same company which manufactures the MA-60 is also the manufacturer of different parts of Airbus, Boeing and ATR which is used worldwide,” he added.

Investigation on progress

KATHMANDU: Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) said that it is investigating the theft and misplacement of aircraft equipments and essential parts. According to the ailing national flag carrier, it has formed an investigation committee that will submit its report after the completion of investigation. The corporation has already claimed compensation from Airport Customs for the missing landing gears. “Similarly, after the investigation report comes of the missing tyre and fly away kits, the corporation will take necessary action,” it said. (Source:THT)

Upper Trishuli 3A’s foundation stone laid

The foundation stone of 60-MW Upper Trishuli III ‘A’ was laid on Wednesday. With the country reeling under acute power crisis, the government is aiming at building the 60-MW project in three years.

Laying the foundation stone of the project located in Simle, Nuwakot, on Wednesday, Energy Minister Post Bahadur Bogati said the project will be a milestone in hydro development.

“Timely completion of the project will be instrumental in minimising load-shedding hours,” the minister said, assuring that the government will prioritise construction of hydropower projects. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 10.6 billion and is expected to be completed by May 1, 2014.

On February 25, 2011, the Cabinet approved a Chinese Exim Bank loan worth Rs 7.08 billion for the construction of the project. The interest rate on the loan is 1.75 percent and its repayment period is 20 years.

China’s Ambassador to Nepal Yang Houlan said Nepal has immense hydropower potential and China is willing to support the Nepali government to develop this sector.

Civil construction work of the project has already been started from June 1, 2011. Chinese contractor,China Gezhouba Group Corporation(CGGC), is carrying out the work. The power generated from the project will be supplied to a substation at Matatirtha in the Capital through a 220-KV 46-KK transmission line. The price of the electricity generated from the project is fixed at Rs 2.42 per unit.(Source:ekantipur)

Kajal is married to a US resident Non-resident Indian Punit Roy who works with Kajal in the US. After the marriage the groom took the bridge to Soaltee Hotelwhere he was living. The new couple will go to Punit’s ancestral home in Delhi, India to complete the marriage rituals. After the completion of the formal marriage ritual in the home, they will fly back to the US.

In the event actress Sushma Karki sang a song to congratulate the new couple and Karishma Manandhar danced a little bit in the stage. Singer Shiva Pariyar also sang a sweet song in the ceremony.

Nepal Telecom to upgrade ADSL services

With an aim to provide cost-effective and high speed broadband internet service to its customers, Nepal Telecom (NTC) is going to upgrade the capacity of its ADSL services.

The company has already started setting up separate broadband remote access servers (BRAS) in the Kathmandu Valley and some major cities outside the valley.

As the ADSL service users and rate of use has increased beyond its expectation, the company is going to install new devices taking into consideration the growing use, a press statement issued by the company said.

Out of the total ADSL capacity of 179,384, NTC has already connected 145, 654 lines in the country.

Similarly, the company is also preparing to distribute additional 53,000 ADSL lines within a year through NGN system.

Presently, NTC has been providing its ADSL service in all 75 districts.

The company has 10 Gbps national IP backbone and 3.2 Gbps international bandwidth. The company has been planning to upgrade its international bandwidth to 4.2 Gbps soon and 10 Gbps within a year.(Source:The Rising Nepal)

Sajha gears up to begin bus services anew

The government has intensified work to operate Sajha buses under a cooperative model as a means of mass transport in Kathmandu Valley. The Ministry of Labour and Transport Management recently submitted a proposal to this effect to the Prime Minister’s Office.

The increased number of vehicles, road accidents, traffic congestion and unmanageable parkings in the Valley has become a headache for the government. Even Prime Minister Babu Ram Bhattarai has taken the transport management issues seriously of late. Based on the directives issued by the PM to encourage mass transport in the Valley, the transport ministry had forwarded the proposal to re-operate the once famous Sajha buses.

“We have submitted a proposal for the operation of Sajha buses to the PM’s office as part of a plan to reduce vehicle congestion,” said Anil Gurung, the under secretary of the transport ministry. He was speaking in a meeting of the parliament’s Finance and Labour Relations Committee on Tuesday. He said the bus service will be operated with a completely new management system.

Putting an end to almost 50 years of government control, Sajha Yatayat had been transformed into a cooperative with directly elected board directors in May. It has been dysfunctional for the last four years, mainly due to irregularities and political interference.

Sajha Yatayat Cooperative has been planning to procure at least 20 new buses in the initial phase and gradually expand services. During its hey-days, Sajha Yatayat used to operate a total of 182 buses on different routes of the country.

In a separate plan to introduce a mass transport system, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City is also working to bring in a metro bus service in Kathmandu. It has already called for expression of interest to this effect from interested individuals and firms. Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, the spokesperson of the KMC, said the office is planning to operate at least 10 double decker buses for 24 hours a day. “We will soon start work to invite tender as this is also one of our major plans,” he said.

The KMC had decided to introduce metro buses with a view to providing reliable and efficient transport service in a public-private partnership as per a response to a suggestion given by the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division of Kathmandu (MTPD). The MTPD has been facing a tough time managing traffic congestion during office hours for lack of sufficient work force, delay in displacement of old vehicles, increased number of private vehicles and haphazard parking. (Source:ekantipur)

Kathmandu-Hetauda fast-track work gains momentum

The private sector has accelerated work to construct the Kathmandu-Hetauda Tunnel Highway road as per a new concept—’4P’—where even locals are involved as investors.

The highway is expected to be completed in the next four years with an investment of Rs 20 billion.

The proposed highway under the 4P—private, public, people and partnership sectors—will make travel to Hetauda from Kathmandu a one-hour-drive, while the distance covered will be 50 km. Under the 4P model, locals and the general people will invest Rs 10,000 while businessmen will invest Rs 100,000 each. Local government bodies and interested Nepalis living abroad and banks, too, can invest in the project.

As per the plan, each sector will contribute 25 percent of the total cost of the project. “There will be around 100,000 shareholders and the project will be an example for building big-budget infrastructure in a participatory manner,” said Kush Kumar Joshi, the president of the Kathmandu-Hetauda Tunnel Highway Stakeholders’ Committee. He was addressing a stakeholders’ meeting in Markhu, Makawanpur, on Saturday.

Joshi said they are planning to start work within a month after acquiring the survey licence for the detailed project report (DPR) from the government.

The Nepal Purbadhar Bikas Company Limited has been registered to undertake the highway construction project. The company has a total of 162 promoters, including 86 locals and 76 businessmen representing the private sector. Joshi, who is also the former president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) said they have already held consultations with Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, the Non-resident Nepalese Association and bankers in this regard.

Currently, people travelling to Hetauda have to take the Tribhuvan Highway route that is a 133-km stretch or the Kathamndu-Mugling-Hetauda section that is 227 km. Traffic on the planned tunnel highway or fast-track is expected to increase by 6,000 vehicles a day. Currently, the Tribuvan Highway sees 200 vehicles travelling to Hetauda every day. Lal Krishna KC, a member of the stakeholders’ committee and a highway expert, said they will first build a tunnel having a length of 3.5 km between Bhimphedi and Kulekhani in Makawanpur that can be crossed in three minutes. He said it will cost them around Rs 10 billion for the construction of the tunnel.

It is estimated that the company will start getting profits within 5-8 years of the highway’s operation. Once opened, traffic coming from the Western part of the country is also expected to opt the Mugling-Hetauda-Kathmandu route.

Apart from businessmen and locals, Nepali contractors, too, are joining hands to have the project completed. “We will soon begin consultations with international firms for the construction of the tunnel,” said Jayaram Lamichhane, the president of Federation of Contractors’ Association of Nepal (FCAN). He said the road will be built or widened by Nepali contractors, while the tunnel that needs more expertise will be built in partnership with international firms. (Source:ekantipur)

Oberoi Hotels sells Soaltee stake

In a large-scale secondary market sale of stock, Oberoi Hotels Private Limited of India on Tuesday sold its entire holding in Hotel Soaltee to Shiv Bikram Land and Investment—a Nepali institutional investor.

The Indian hotel chain sold its 6.84 percent stake (1.02 million units of shares) in the oldest five-star hotel of the country for Rs 142.8 million.

Earlier on July 17, Khetan Group had sold its 428,000 units of shares worth Rs 720 million in Bottlers Nepal to Gurkha Brewery through the secondary market.

Although the company’s share price was at Rs 186 per unit on Monday, Oberoi Hotels sold its shares for Rs 140 per unit as per the agreement reached earlier between the two parties. The two sides had signed a ‘Sales and Purchase Agreement’ on September 14 and the Department of Industries had given its go ahead to the deal. The Oberoi group had reached an understanding with the Soaltee Hotel management to sell the shares a couple of months ago. The group had to compromise on share price due to poor stock market performance.

After the Oberoi group pulling out its investment, the ownership of Nepali nationals in the hotel has reached 90 percent. “Oberoi has sold its entire stake to Nepali investors,” said a company source. “Now, only one foreign investor, Holiday Inn, has its stake in the hotel.”

Soaltee Enterprises owns the largest stake in the hotel. Nepal Airlines Corporation has 12 percent and Holiday Inn Investment Nepal, a subsidiary of Holiday Inn, has around 10 percent stake in the hotel.

MLTR ARRIVES IN KATHMANDU NEPAL (PHOTO GALLERY)

Danish pop-soft rock band Michael Learns To Rock (also known as MLTR) arrived in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

The internationally acclaimed band scheduled to perfom at Tundikhel on Saturday was received by concert organisers at the Tribhuvan International
Airport with Khadas and garlands.

Formed in 1988, the three member band comprises singer-key boardist Jascha Ricther, drummer Kåre Wanscher, and guitarist Mikkel Lentz. The band has sold over 11 million records worldwide, and is very popular in Asia with hits including ‘Sleeping Child’, ’25 Minutes’, ‘Out of the Blue’ and ‘Paint My Love’ from their second album Colours (1993) which sold over 1.1 million records. They will perform their hit numbers to a large Kathmandu crowd that eagerly awaited the arrival of the band since the past many weeks.

The band has produced seven studio albums as well as many live and greatest hits albums, and are currently recording their eighth studio album.

The band will be staying at Radisson Hotel in Lazimpat for the duration of their visit.

This is the second time in a year that Kathmandu is witnessing a concert by internationally acclaimed musicians. Canadian rocker Bryan Adams had performed in February this year. nepalnews.com

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Bollywood Star, has BABY GIRL

Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has given birth to a baby girl, husband actor Abhishek Bachchan has tweeted.

Father-in-law Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan also tweeted: "I am Dada (grandfather) to the cutest baby girl". Aishwarya was admitted to the Seven Hills Hospital in the Indian city of Mumbai early Tuesday morning. This is her first child. There has been tremendous interest in Aishwarya's pregnancy from the media and her fans. "It's a girl!," Abhishek wrote on the micro-blogging site at 0952 local time (0422 GMT).

Amitabh Bachchan said he was "ecstatic" to be a grandfather and thanked all those who sent out congratulatory messages. Aishwarya's pregnancy had been keenly watched since June when Amitabh Bachchan announced the pregnancy of his daughter-in-law.

"News news news!! I am going to become a grandfather. Aishwarya expecting. So happy and thrilled," he had tweeted. According to reports, bookies had bet 1.5 billion rupees (around $30m) on whether Aishwarya would deliver on 11 November or not. The Bachchans are known as the "first family" of Bollywood and have millions of fans following their every move.

GOVERNMENT PLANS FOR KATHMANDU METRO RAILWAY

Korean consulting firm Chungsuk Engineering Company to prepare a Detail Project Report (DPR) for the construction of Bardibas-Birgunj section of Mechi-Mahakali Electrical Railway system and negotiations with the same firm are underway for the feasibility study of the proposed metro train service in the Kathmandu valley.

The committee is engaged in final negotiations with the same Korean firm (Chungsuk Engineering Company) to finalize the contract agreement after evaluating its technical and financial proposals for the feasibility study of metro railway - a Mass Rapid Transit (underground and elevated railway) system for the capital.

The government pushed for a Mass Rapid Transit system in the valley about two years ago in a bid to manage the worsening traffic conditions in the capital due to unchecked rise in the number of vehicles and poor transport infrastructure. An estimated Rs 80 million is needed to complete the feasibility of the Metro railway line. 

Chungsuk Engineering Company of Korea, RITES Limited (India), Systra FA of France and TEAM Consulting Engineering and Management of Thailand were short-listed and asked to submit their financial and technical proposals for the study.

The proposed railway network is expected to cover almost all major bus stops and connect the city with the outskirts, making commuter movement easier and faster, and laying down of 75 km of railway track including 27 km along the Ring Road.

Dense fog prompts flight cancellations

At least four international flights were diverted and all Kathmandu-bound international carriers were told to circle the sky for more than 45 minutes on Sunday morning after dense fog prevented planes from landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).

The weather conditions also forced cancellation of over 100 domestic flights to Lukla, Janakpur, Bharatpur and Pokhara and other remote sectors. Normally, over 170 flights are operated every day in the domestic sector. 

No flights landed between 9:15 am to 12:00 noon while the weather did not totally affect the departures, a TIA source said. 

International carriers—Oman Air, Gulf Air, Spice Jet and China Eastern—were diverted due to the inclement weather. Other carriers—Bahrain Air, Qatar Airways, Jet Airways, Air India, Thai Airways, Fly Dubai—spent more than 45 minutes over the Kathmandu skies before they were allowed to land, Kishore Kumar Khatri, an officer at the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at the TIA, said.

According to him, the diverted planes landed late in the afternoon.

UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who was on a Thai Airways plane that was waiting to land at 12:40 pm, was compelled to cancel his party’s Central Committee meeting scheduled at 1:00 pm on Sunday. The aircraft landed at 1:40 pm. 

“There was massive congestion after the fog, as there were several flights waiting to land,” Khatri said. “Many of them must have spent more than an hour circling the TIA before they could land,” according to the TIA. 

The weather, however, did not affect all departing flights. The TIA reported a 1,600-metre ground visibility early in the morning while it improved to 4,000 metres before noon.

For big aircraft, the normal approach visibility on the ground is 3,200 metres while for smaller planes it is 1,600 metres. Although the TIA had ground visibility of over 3,200 metres before noon, TIA sources said the carriers may have been denied descent due to poor vertical visibility.

The most hit was Pokhara Airport. According to Pokhara Airport Chief Pratap Babu Tiwari, only a single flight of Tara Air was operated on Sunday.

“The airport had 2,500 metre visibility during the day and 3,000 metres in the evening,” Tiwari said. Flights are operated when the visibility is 5,000 metre in Pokhara. However, carriers can take off and land at 2,500-metre visibility by applying special visual flights rules. “However, flights normally do not apply the special visual flights rules due to safety concerns.” The tourist hotspot witnesses over 38 flight movements a day.

On Sunday, Yeti Airlines cancelled 10 flights to Pokhara and one to Tumlingtar. Tara Air, the subsidiary of Yeti Airlines, cancelled 15 flights to Lukla, five to Jomsom and one each to Lamidanda and Faflu.

Similarly, Buddha Air suspended six flights and Guna Air cancelled five flights to Pokhara. Agni Air reported five cancellations to Pokhara and two flights to Lukla.
