It’s as clear as crystal that we’ve been hit by a new wave of Nepali movies lately which is definitely a great thing because let’s face it, exclamations like “Oh, I can’t wait for it to release!” and “Man, that was really good” were either meant for Hollywood or Bollywood cinemas.
Yes, we have witnessed a series of locally produced films with fresh concepts and unconventional style of directions but at the same time, we can’t say all of them have managed to impress the audience, although their effort is appreciable. After all, change is a steady process and we can’t expect things to be absolutely different overnight. Anyway, I recently happened to discover a trailer for one of the upcoming films and its title should definitely have you interested. It’s called Facebook.
Supposed to be based on the popular social networking site, Facebook has been produced by Sunil Kumar Thapa and directed by Suraj Subba. The film, which was shot partly in Kathmandu and partly in Singapore, features Rajesh Hamal, Jharana Thapa, Subash Thapa, Wilson Bikram Rai, and Anurag Man Singh Kunwar among others and is set for nationwide release on Shrawan 15. When I caught its poster for the first time, I was kind of very excited because it looked promising. So it got me really expectant and I couldn’t help but watch its trailer. And let’s just say, it didn’t quite meet my expectations.
From the video clip, you can figure out that there’s a bit of love story going on and then alongside it’s also an action/crime thriller which is a staple of almost every Nepali picture. However, I was left wondering to myself, “Where the hell does the FB part come in?” Yeah, there’s actually no sign of the FB thing in the trailer so we can only hope that they’ve saved it in the movie itself. But my main concern is the ditto logo of FB they’ve used. I hope they won’t get in any sort of trouble, even though there isn’t much chance of it.
Realty sector gradually emerging out of trouble
Real estate transactions have picked up, albeit in slow pace, in the recent months, leading to increase in land registration fee collection.
According to the Finance Ministry, the land registration fee collection has increased by 16.16 percent to Rs 3.09 billion as of first 10 months of the current fiscal year compared to Rs 2.66 billion over the same period last fiscal year.
According to data provided by the Department of Land Reforms and Management (DoLRM), land registration fee collection has remained higher this year compared to last year except during the first three months. The DoLRM collected a revenue of Rs 723.6 million in the first three months of this fiscal compared to Rs 756.2 million over the same period last year.
However, the collection of land registration fee has not met the target. For the first 10 months this year, the government had targeted to collect Rs 3.81 billion.
While looking at the land revenue collection over the last three years, collection started to suffer since banks and financial institutions started discouraging real estate loans as per the direction of Nepal Rastra Bank in the middle of fiscal year 2009-10.
The land registration fee collection dropped to Rs 3.21 billion in FY 2010-11 from Rs 4.65 billion in FY 2009-10 owing to the recession in the real estate sector. The revenue collection, however, has improved of late with realty traders reporting gradual increase in their trades.
Ichchha Raj Tamang, president of the Nepal Land and Housing Developers’ Association (NLHDA), said transactions in individual lands have slowly gone up, bringing relief to housing developers. “The government’s soft corner has helped revive the realty sector,” he said.
Tamang’s thought is shared by Min Man Shrestha, general secretary of the NLHDA. He explained that the housing and apartment sales have gone up by 25-30 percent in the recent days, while the low-cost lands are also being sold in the recent days.
He attributes the recent growth to banks’ decision to lower interest rate on home loans, which has now come down to 10-11 percent.
Bankers also admit that they have started providing home loans although they are reluctant provide extra loans to housing projects.
CEO of NIC Bank Sashin Joshi said that the home loans bear less risk compared to loans provided to developers, and banks are more willing to disberse home loans in the recent days.
Realty traders are of the view that loans should be given to developers to allow them to complete the housing and apartment projects. But the developers’ poor repayment record has forced the banks not to make extra lending to the developers.
“Repayment is poor and it may aggravate at the end of the current fiscal year when all banks go for recovery of the loans at bigger scale,” said Joshi.
The Nepal Rastra Bank holds the same assessment. “The realty sector has not improved at all,” said a senior NRB official. “Higher revenue collection by the land revenue offices could be due to higher declaration of purchase price by buyers amid threat that they might have to show income source on many other occasions,” said the central bank official.
However, the government’s efforts as well as excess liquidity in the banks and financial institutions are expected to help boost the realty sector. The government is mulling to arrange cheap loans for its employees so that they could purchase apartments from the developers.
The government has also raised the investment ceiling in the realty sector, with the investors no longer required to show source of their income up to Rs 10 million from the previous limit of Rs 5 million.

Kathmandu-Hetauda tunnel road to be built
Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai on Monday said that the country was at a crossroads to start creating its own history by beginning economic revolution so as to build a New Nepal.
Addressing a gathering organised to sign an agreement between the Ministry of Physical Planning and Works and Nepal Purbadhar Bikas Company Limited, an infrastructure development company, at the National Planning Commission (NPC) Secretariat at Singh Durbar, Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai said that it was one of the first projects being constructed under the public-private partnership with the people’s mobilisation.
He said that the project was a landmark to kick off the initiatives of building a New Nepal.
Prime Minister Bhattarai assured the private sector that there would be no problem while implementing the project.
“There were only talks, now the time has come for us to show by doing something,” he said asking the private sector to remain committed and serious on their part.
Stating that the government was committed to completing the process of drafting a new constitution by May 27, he informed that the process of starting large projects is underway.
He also urged the government officials, private sector and the people to make the project a landmark project that could help boost the investment climate in the country and also help enhance the morale of foreign investors.
Vice-Chairman of the NPC Dipendra Bahadur Kshetri said that the project was started clarifying some legal and policy level hindrances to start BOOT model.
He hoped that the project would be a success model.
Kush Kumar Joshi, Chairman of the Nepal Purbadhar Bikas Company Limited, said that the construction of the Kathmandu-Hetauda road would turn out to be economic and efficient for the country.
The 48-km Kathmandu-Kulekhani-Hetauda Tunnel Highway will have around 3-km long tunnel.
The Ministry of Physical Planning and Works and the Nepal Purbadhar Bikash Company Limited have signed the preliminary agreement at the NPC hall at the presence of Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai.
The total cost of the project is estimated around Rs. 20 billion.
With the completion of the road, it will take around one hour to reach Hetauda from Kathmandu. There are two to three alternative ways at present to reach Hetauda from Kathmandu. All these roads take around 7-8 hours.
Joshi said that the road would turn a life line for the country if it was completed within the stipulated timeframe.
He informed that it will take around six months for the feasibility study of the project and around three and a half years to complete the whole project.

300 NEW Taxis for Trivbhuvan International Airport
They say you don't get a second chance to create a first impression. Surely that means our current international airport needs to go under a major renovation spree! One wonders what impression, if any, is left on the tourists that touch down in TIA. Renovating the only international airport has been a task which the government has worked on for the past few years and one of the key development that will take place will be the addition of 300 new taxis for the airport. That's surely good news! A private firm will be replacing 170 taxis with 300 new taxis. Incoming tourists will be happy to hear that English language and a uniform will also be made compulsory for taxi drivers. According to the memorandum, the selected private company must bring 150 taxis in operation within three months followed by a six months period for the total of 300.
I heard the toilets in the international terminal is in very very poor condition (as reported recently by a friend), maybe that should be next on the list. I look forward to sharing an update on this post, three months later, hopefully with photos of the new taxis in TIA.

Former Miss Nepal Malvika Subba has finally tied the knot with boyfriend Riyaz Shrestha at her home in Golfutar, Kathmandu on the 25th April. Whilst hundreds of us send the best wishes for the couple, I am sure there are guys out there crying in litres upon hearing news of this outspoken beauty queens momentous occasion. I say this because Malvika recently topped the list on the Most Attractive Female on the survey by Saptahik Weekly. That's saying something, Riyaz is a lucky guy!

Malvika first came to my radar through watching her on a daily basis on Call Kantipur, she was always fascinating. Especially observing her expressions, body language and the things that she'd say. She's unpredictable and there aren't many like her. On that note' let the festivities begin for the couple
